As a mother of two young boys, I have recently been volunteering my time to promote positive psychology in my son’s school. I just met with the superintendent and principle Monday morning to begin a dialogue on how I could help add to what they are already doing and then…Wednesday happens. Another mass school shooting!
Today I find myself even more motivated then ever to help end the violence. I am speaking on a radio show this afternoon on this topic and plan to start working on educating more parents, teachers, and school districts in my area to stop this this violence in our children’s schools.
In the meantime, I would like to draw your attention to two programs I am very actively involved with. Both were created based on the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting.
The first is a program called “Choose Love” and it is based on the principles of positive psychology. Scarlet Lewis created this program after losing her 6 year old son in the Sandy Hook Massacre and worked with a team of psychologists, academics, educators, and universities to develop this simple and effective program. All of the resources and information are found online at https://www.jesselewischooselove.org
I also am a Sandy Hook Promise Leader. Sandy Hook Promise is an organization that helps parents, children, teachers, and others recognize the signs of a school shooter and what to do about it. Groups that you can get involved with, and excellent free resources. Please visit http://www.sandyhookpromise.org
As a community and a nation I hope each of you will get involved to help prevent violence in our schools. No parent should fear their child going to school and never coming home and no child should be afraid of going to school. Lets Stop This Madness!!!
