What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a powerful form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that can help you decrease destructive thoughts, impulsive urges, and harmful behaviors. This therapy has been scientifically shown over the past 25 years to help with addictions, eating disorders, mood dysregulation, and personality disorders.
It has also been shown to improve interpersonal relationships. The use of the term “Dialectic” simply means that in life we often need to find the balance between two opposing ideas. For example, a common dialectic is the opposing ideas of changing versus staying the same.
Clients focus on DBT skills with 4 core modules:
- Core Mindfulness
- Distress Tolerance
- Emotion Regulation
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
