Child/Adolescent Therapy

Working with children and adolescents requires a different therapeutic skill set than working with adults. Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver and Associates, has therapist who are trained in working with children and adolescents. We do not have a one size fits all therapeutic model, instead, we match our skills to the needs of each child and adolescent we work with.

Child Therapy

When working with younger children, we use talk therapy, art therapy, games, skill building, socialization training, and behavioral modification. Our focus remains on using positive/motivation psychology, the same as when we work with adults. We understand that entrusting your child to someone else is a scary thing to do and we take this very seriously. At Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver and Associates we treat your children as if they were our own. We include the entire family at various points during the treatment process in order to build a better home environment since your child spends more time with you than with us. When working with young children, we require your participation as a parent and will spend at least 10 minutes before and/or after session talking with you about ways to work with your child at home.

Adolescent Therapy

When working with adolescents, we request the permission of the adolescent before speaking with parents in order to respect their confidentiality, maintain rapport, and establish trust. If your child presents a danger to self or others, you will be notified. In the state of Pennsylvania a minor, 14 years or older, can consent for their mental health treatment and parental consent is not needed. We ask parents to respect confidentiality of adolescent clients since this is what works best to achieve the greatest therapeutic success. We are always more than happy for you to share your concerns briefly between sessions, but ask that you allow the 55 minute session hour to remain private time for your adolescent to participate in their therapy. We are able to listen to what you have to say but cannot confide in what they share unless your adolescent (14 or older) gives us permission to do so.

Family Therapy

If is seems that regular family therapy is needed, in addition to individual therapy, we will provide a different therapist at Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver and associates to conduct family therapy or you are free to seek family therapy at another practice of your choosing. We believe that your child’s primary therapist needs to remain in the role of “individual” therapist to maintain trust that we work hard to gain.

Collaborative Care

Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver and Associates believes in reaching out to school guidance counselors, school psychologists, teachers, principles, physicians, psychiatrists, and coaches in order to coordinate comprehensive care for our clients. We will go the extra mile to provide the best possible care for your child. There may be times when we will need your assistance in having these professionals complete forms or send us records so that we can provide the best possible care for your child.
