Meet Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver, PsyD

A professional woman, Dr. Cynthia Edwards Hawver, wearing glasses and a black shirt, is seated at her desk.

Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver is licensed psychologist who has worked in the field for over 25 years. She graduated from Cornell University (with a Bachelor of Science with Distinction) and completed her Doctoral Degree at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. She went on to complete her APA (American Psychological Association) accredited internship at The Pennsylvania State University. After her internship she worked at The University of Scranton for five years before starting her private practice full time. In 2015, she expanded her practice and formed Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver Psy.D. and Associates, LLC. Currently Dr. Edwards-Hawver is a member of PSYPACT (Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology), which allows her to practice telehealth in all APPIC-approved states.

Dr. Edwards-Hawver has extensive expertise in eating disorders, trauma, parenting, training/teaching/supervision, psychological assessment, self-care, body image, self-esteem, Lyme disease, hypnosis, infertility, adoption, EFT, family/couples work, and coaching. Dr. Edwards-Hawver’s current focus area is coaching professional moms over age 40 who are parenting young children. For further information about Dr. Edwards-Hawver’s training and experience, you can view her vita here (Dr. Edwards-Hawver’s CV).

Dr. Edwards-Hawver has appeared as a guest expert on WVIA/PBS television and Newswatch 16. She was featured in the Scranton Times as "The New Coach in Town," was a guest on Word of Mom Radio and local radio stations, and has appeared on the Mental Health Matters Television Show. Additionally, she has been a featured speaker for employees of Proctor and Gamble, Prudential, Lyme Disease organizations, and the Scranton Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Edwards-Hawver was a finalist for three Sage Awards through the Scranton Chamber of Commerce.

Her therapeutic orientation is eclectic, taking a psychodynamic perspective to understand a client’s past, while using strategic, motivational, interpersonal, and cognitive/behavioral approaches to achieve change. Dr. Edwards-Hawver strongly believes that therapy is not “a one-size fits all” model and tailors her therapy to meet the needs of the individual client. She also brings her coach training into her work with clients, making therapy active and not passive.

Dr. Edwards-Hawver was drawn to the field of psychology after having heart surgery at the age of 21. Her heart was damaged due to years of suffering from Anorexia Nervosa and later abusing laxatives. She was in recovery when she was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. After undergoing three heart surgeries and getting a second chance at life, she made the decision to become a psychologist so she could help others suffering from eating disorders. She has been fully recovered from her eating disorder for over 30 years.

Her most recent battle has come in the form of Lyme disease. Dr. Edwards-Hawver most likely contracted Lyme disease in 2012 but was not diagnosed until 2014. She understands first-hand how frustrating it can be to find physicians who are knowledgeable in Lyme disease and the devastating physical and emotional toll Chronic Lyme Disease can have on your life. She is a strong advocate for people becoming the CEO of their own healthcare. In addition to Lyme disease, she also has several confections that are often common in Lyme Disease Patients: Mycoplasma, Babesiosis, and Epstein-Barr. Just as Dr. Edwards-Hawver did in the past, she has taken this additional journey in her life to help others.

Dr. Edwards-Hawver has been married for over 25 years, has two amazing sons Thomas (11) and Lucas (9). The Hawver family has a shelter doggie (Stella) and a bearded dragon (Buddy Bob). In her free time, she loves spending time in nature, traveling, being near water, yoga, hiking, decorating, spending time with friends, learning, going for massages, and embracing spirituality. Dr. Edwards-Hawver is currently building a coaching practice for moms over age 40 parenting young children, as starting a family in your 40’s is a whole different ballgame.
